My arab filly has rubbed her mane badly after being microchipped, and has a show coming up early November. Has anyone had experience/success with lse manes to fill the gap?,
A friend of mine makes her own lse rosettes with the mane that she pulls from her show horses and can use it on the naughty ones who rubs their own manes out :P . They look really great and you cant tell they are ke. She stitches them in to what little mane is left.
Of course with the arabs you dont plait manes do you? How would you attach the lse mane? Im assuming you thread it onto what mane is left or glue it on with water soluble glue? How much as she rubbed out? Im assuming it is mid-way down the crest being due to the microchip?
Hi oldshowy,
Im soo sorry I am not closer to you. I am the expert at attaching lse hair to manes and tails. As kizza said, I would cut the tail hair off another horse (same colour) and with the owners permission (LOL). Then I can reattach by sewing it back on. Takes a little time and practice but it does work and you wouldnt know it wasnt thier own. Rosettes are the easiest to do. I even have them pre plaited and rolled and stiched for such an emergency. No time to stich?? Then superglue in!!Black fake horse tails - No.4,!! The trick for free flowing mane is to do a little at a time. Just a few strands. Takes heaps of patience. Just had a thought, but I havent tried this one myself, but if you had heaps of hair at your disposal, try plaiting a section as long as you need hidden. Then stich on hair along this long section so it looks like a (fly veil with string) then stich onto the whole thing onto what mane you have left, from the underside so you cannot see the stiching. Yes, I think this would work......maybe..........
Having recently bought a shetland that had her tail cut way too short (shouldnt be cut at all) I have bought something called Shapely MTG after hearing some great reviews for it. Can help hair grow up to 4 in five weeks- apparently. I really cant understand how putting something on the horse can make hair grow but Ive heard from people who swear by it and thought Id give it a go. It might not help you for November but it might be worth a try anyway. I Googled it to buy it on line and it seems that the best stockist was an Arabian horse supplies site.......
Thanks guys, hey Im no hairdresser, , miss Khaandi has a very sparse 6-7 and looks bly awful. Contacted a lse mane & tail maker in NZ who charges $20 per inch. Her pieces have clips which you attach underneath to at least 1 of mane, it really isnt suitable as the clips would be seen on a free flowing mane. Probably cost a fortune for extra length too.
Need to find an old lady with long steel grey hair who wants a haircut! & make extensions (which some big studs do so I am told!). The lovely long tresses on top show horses are usually ke,
Everyday I keep looking at it an try and convince myself its not too bad!!
BTW Jenn, how is the riding going?
Ill give an indepth update in the new future. Just a little tired now. Been soooooo busy with work that I havent done as much as I would have liked, but Ill spill my guts tomorrow.....
Wow Jenn, thats seriously cool ... it would make an excellent step-by-step tutorial in a horse magazine. I didnt even know it could be done. You are extremely clever!
Thanks kathjuz.
Im sure Im not the first to think of it though. Both my first arab and my stockhorse would both rub the middle section of their manes out. I rug 24/7 religiously with mane savers in the rugs and they would still manage to do it. Electric fencing around everything didnt help either, so I had to learn/ do something out of necessity. I started with rosettes as I needed these to show (and I MUST win best presented) LOL!!!! My friends think Im anal!!!!! If you cant sew and you dont like the thought of super glue, I have used clear double sided tape also which works well for a shorter period. Sewing looks the most natural but more time consuming. It really isint that hard. I cut a section of tail around ten cm long. Tie it together on top for a starting point. Plait all the way to the bottom and sew together. Then tie a knot in the top (this helps get a bud) then wrap the plait around it and sew the end in when finished. Presto one rosette. You can then atttach this to the existing mane with thread or glue or tape if there is not enough mane to sew to. If you have done a crap job and dont have time to refix, I carry white tape in my tackbox also and wrap this around the rosette and walla: dressage rosettes!!!false tails !:):):)
Champion tails make the BEST lse tails, they also (according to website) do lse forelocks and manes and tails for rocking horses, so perhaps is worth giving them a ring and you can see what they have/suggest??
Dont know what theyre like matching manes but we gave them a (lse) tail to copy and it came back practically strand for strand perfect, or you can send samples of your colour to them.

OK all you smart people ... got lse mane piece yesterday, and really have no idea how to attach it. So if anyone can give me step by step instructions, would greatly appreciate it as really stressing out,
Hi oldshowy.
Thats exactly what I had pictured in my head!!! ( read earlier post)!!! I would now get plaiting string and needle. Plait what you have left of a mane into sections and sew the ends together. The more the better. This will give you strength when you sew the lse one on. Use a needle and thread and slowly sew the lse mane onto the plaited bits of mane that is left. Put the lse mane as near to the crest of neck as you can. The plaits from the real mane should now be like support posts. Wish I could do it for you!!!! Send in a pic when done.
Sorry was in a rush,Ill try and explain better: Section off mane as best you can. This will work best with as many little plaits as you can manage. When plaiting, just plait a couple of times and either sew off or there are clear rubber bands available now, and tie them off. You should now have just litle plaits, with free flowing mane which will blend into the lse one. This will give you some support to sew the lse mane onto. Flip mane over the neck , revealing the underside. Place lse mane as near to crest as possible, then using the plaits as a guide start sewing the lse mane in. Using the needle and thread, push needle through the stiching on the lse mane and then through the top of your real plait and pull in tight. Do a few loops each time to give support, then like doing a hem just keep on going. The smaller the stiches the more natural the look. Your very crafty oldshowy, I reckon you could do a much neater job than me!!!!
If this doesnt work, you could try a glue gun and tediously glue the lse mane onto the existing hairs a little at a time. Just like extensions. Or ask a hairdresser how they actually attach extensions. Couldnt see it being all that different., false tails.
