So. I really need to learn how to braid a forelock. I show in hunter classes with my mare. I can do her mane and tail fine, but I really struggle with her forelock.
Ive tried with a normal french braid as well as a backwards french braid. I like that much better,Horse hair fabric-No.46-Herdsma, more ,confusing, horse forelocks but it looks so much nicer. I can see the braid more.
My mare has a short and poofy forelock. Its kind of brittle as well. I think if I washed it a little it would help (I never brush it either)
Does anyone have any tips for keeping them tighter and not poofy? As well as tips for braiding or a method for it?
Thanks!
Its much harder to braid a clean mane/tail/forelock then one that is a litte dirty so I would not suggest washing it. I really dont have much advice expect for lots of practice and pull tight.
I figured. I would probably wash it a week or so before, just because it gets gunky, kind of
Bump, as well. Anything else??
I was just looking in the valley vet mag. They sell a quic braid says offers the perfect grip for tighter braids, neater bands, and minimal stray hairs. The price is $11.29 :) I have never used it so I couldnt tell you if it works good or not.
I always use that stuff! Definitely worth it! (But if you can, get the small test bottle that lasts me the whole summer. You dont need a lot
Hmmmm I may have to order some my daughter always is braiding her ponies mane and tail for shows:) do you have to have her mane braided? I did this on my daughters for a show where you put pony tails in and just keep splitting them till there is is not enough hair to take from one to another.?
Horsecrazy- you dont have to braid, horse forelocks it just looks nicer and well put together. It also depends on the show. At a local/schooling show theyre not too important, but its a great opportunity to learn and practice. At larger or rated shows, youll most likely see every horse braided.
I think what youre talking about is a diamond braid? On their mane? If thats what you meant, you can do that depending on what youre showing in.
I show hunters, so her mane is pulled thin and very short.
A diamond braid, I would think, is suitable for western shows (if you dont want to cut and band)
For an english schooling show, I dont see why not. Ive seen some pretty cool braids at the local shoes ive been to.
