How do you put a False Tails in?
A show and tell...should help you. Click on the link.
Involved with horses(a lifetime) and AQHA for over 60 years...Halter, Trail, Working Cow Horse, Western Pleasure, AQHA World Qualifiers ++++, I am a AQHA show steward; Ive had the privilege of working with some of the best judges in the nation.
You dont tie it to the tail...you have to braid it in. Look at some vids on youtube theyll give you step by step.
The last tip is - spray the inside of your horses back legs and his hocks with Show Sheen or even rub him with a Bounce sheet. You want to avoid the ke look of switchs whenHow do you put a False Tails in? they cling between the horses legs.
First and foremost, start with a clean horses tail and a clean switch. You want the hair to be totally dry. Dont apply Show Sheen before you start or it will be too slippery. You need to restrain your horse so he doesnt move while you adjust it. You will need the switch, half a dozen rubber bands in the same color as the tail, some Show Sheen, a pair of scissors and a tail brush.
If I know I am going to leave it in for long ( if a long time in between classes) I always wrap some vet wrap around where the top of the ke tail is to take the weight off of the braid. If I have a first thing in the morning class I will put it in the night before and make sure I wrap it where it connects, braid the whole tail and put in a tail bag. that way I am not rushing in the morning to put it in and perhaps not get it in as good as I want it.
Now, stand back and look at your work. Is the length right? If not, take it out. If its close, then fluff the top of the tail around the switch, sure you get the switch lying in the center. Brush the two together. At this point you can apply Show Sheen. Brush the two layers so they blend well. Stand back and look. Is there a lump of the switch? If so, can you adjust it by just moving brushing things a bit? At this point you may need to trim the length of your horses real tail so everything lies even. Remember, for rail classes you can be a bit longer than Horsemanship/equitation classes, but the tail must be long enough the horse doesnt step on it when he backs. If your switch is truely too long for the horse you can trim it even, but dont forget that the switch wont grow! Im much more inclinded to trim my horses real tail than the switch to get things completely even.
Ill give you instructions, but honestly - without photos its tough to understand how to put a switch in. You might want to google horse tail switch Instructions there you can get similiar description as what Ill give and photos to accompany them.
I like the one with the small loop at the top. I prefer to put my tail under neath the real tail. I just pull enough hair out to make a small braid braid 1,2,3 then run the middle piece of hair through the loop on ke tail, pull tight so loop goes close to tail bone. then keep braiding, I pull a little more real tail in every once in awhile so it is not just hanging by the first 3 pieces. when I get below the top of the ke tail I will pull some hair from the back of the ke tail and add to my braid, do this on both sides , this will attach the tail so that it does not swing separate from the real tail. When you are done get a human brush... the kind that you blow your hair dry with.. (Pin brush?) and brush through the tail to mix the ke tail together with the real tail.... this is the important part.. it intertwines the hairs.
To keep my hands free I actually lay the switch around my neck like a scarf! Brush your horses tail. Then hold the switch up to the horses tail, directly under the dock (the bone) You must sten the switch right under that bone, not on top, so estimate how high you must sten it so it matches the real tails length. Once you have a good idea where to the switch will need to be stened, slip the switch back around your neck.
Good luckk.
ALSO....
The type of tail extension you have is a switch. They are amazingly easy to put in once youve done it a time or two. After a bit of practice I can put in a tail extension in about 10 minutes, all by myself, and that would be from the very start to the end.
There, youre done.
Good luck, hope that helps.
How do you attach a lse tail the best way i dont want it to ll out lol, its one with a loop at the top and my horse has a really thin tail.
Dont leave the switch in overnight. You can leave the braid in,horse tail extension just remove the switch and reband. This will make your applying of the switch the next day even shorter, only a minute or two.
Part the tail in the center and reach into the hair right under the dock. You do not want the switch to be at the front or it will show, but all the way under the tail isnt ideal either, you want it in the center. Take a piece of hair about the thickness of a pencil out from the center of the tail under the dock. Braid it a few times, false tails only going down an inch or so. Then take the switch off your neck and hold it to the braid. Is it still going to be the right length when you are done? If not,Horse hair fabrics-No, start again. If so, braid the tail over the switch. In other words, the loop goes into the three strands of the braid, two will be over and one under (or vice versa) My switch has two loops, so I will insert the loop into the braid, braid a time or two (going only 1/2 inch or so) then insert the second loop and braid a bit more. Braid another inch or two and then end the braid with an elastic. I actually use two elastics, makes it much stronger. Braid down another inch, put in two more elastics.
