False Tail - How Lon false horse tails g?

Jocken3 on ebay has really good lse tails, all natural horse hair not synthetic. I hate synthetic. It doesnt swish like natural hair. Make sure you get the real stuff! I got triple thick for Savannahs tail, and like 120cm long. I chopped off about 30cm of that but its better to have too much than too little! I like the tails longer, they look more elegant when they are longer, but have a look at some current show photos and see what the champion horses are doing re: length.

ETA Or maybe they are on the horses whose owners didnt manage the carry length too well? Ha!Horse hair fabric-No.47-Herdsma

I am going to need a lse tail for my horse for when we make our showing debut, but how long should I get one? Just had a look at a couple of websites and didnt realise they came in different lengths. My horse is 16h and carries his tail when he moves; at present his tail is not banged, but when he moves it comes to about mid-cannon length. Should it be shorter when he is being shown?
OK if you have a fetish for toilet brushes.
Suggestions and information appreciated.
I Prefer a plaited tail to finish the look of regardless of if the horse had a lsie or not BUT I cant plait them at all so if the horse can get away with a pulled tail I will do that just to keep it neat.
Well the longer the better for a lse tail because you will have to trim it to your horses tail length and if its shorter than your horses own tail it will look odd! Some 2nd hand lsies have been used on ponies and obviously will be too short for a TB.
Firstly tail length really depends on the horse if you show us some photos of him standing square and of him moving we might be able to give you an idea of length.
As LindaH said but just make sure you get get one long enough to cover the carry length. See where his tail comes to when hes just standing and then compare to a photo when hes carrying - if that makes sense. Before you cut either the lsie or his own tail practice putting the f/t in.... many, many times! There are right and wrong ways and if not done properly they can drop and look ridiculous. Worse is when they drop out. And this does happen
Another question (and this is a dumb one I admit!): can you still plait a tail if you add a lse tail? Im quite good at plaiting tails and wont be going to enough shows to pull my horses tail, so I want to know if its ok to plait when a lsie is added? I know, I know, check out Horse Deals (Im sure someone will suggest it), but where tails are concerned its a bit difficult to make out much detail.
Measure from the bottom of your horses dock to where you want the tail to end (usually near the ergots just below the hocks) and thats the length of tail you need. They usually come untrimmed and you can cut them off square to the desired length. Because the lsie attaches to the end of the dock you can still plait the top of the tail as normal. There are plenty of plaited horses at comps with lsies in, plaiting seems to be becoming more popular again, whereas years ago they were all pulled or shaved.
Then you buy you tail and put it in at a height you are happy with and cut it.
Nothing looks nicer than a well plaited, full tail.
Yes you can definitely still braid the tail with a lsie! You plait in the lsie below the dock so it hangs more naturally... it wont interfere with your braiding at all. I preferred to pull/shave my girls tail cos it made her butt look bigger and she had this ridiculous toilet brush hair at the top that stuck out in all directions. Much neater shaved! But personal preference. Its a bit of work to maintain a pulled/shaved tail so if youre going to do it make sure you know what youre getting yourself into!

Trends currently seem to be a little shorter (btwn hock and ergot) but that my just be an impression Ive gained?
See if you can get hold of the Vicky Lawrie DVD Presenting To Win (inexpensive) she has some great tips and info on using lse tails - both whole tails and fillers and step by step instructions on good attachment methods, and cutting to length.
